I thought I’d give you another quick slice of life around here this Tuesday, pretty much because it’s been a busy day and I need to get a chicken in the oven in twenty minutes! Let’s see if I can make it happen…
The weather’s cooling off for us now. And probably warming up for you. Lucky.
But we have these beautiful sunrises coming over the mountains in the morning!
If you happen to hold your cursor over that picture and wonder why it is entitled “Sunset Reflection,” well, I was in a hurry — I told you, I only have twenty minutes!
That one too. Sunrise. Sorry.
A big slice of life in Gordon’s Bay right now: We’re reading plenty of books these days.
Notice anything on the Bear’s chin?
He got in a fight with the corner of the tupperware drawer. I suppose he came off second best.
But we picked out that puzzle from Grandpa I told you about…
He’s pretty stoked.
It has a little car that plays music. Buttons + Music as a result of pushing said buttons = Happy Bear
(THANK YOU, GRANDPA!)
He’s still figuring out what goes where…which is good. What fun would it be if he could figure it out first time?
Okay! I saved the best sunset sunrise!! shot for last and I still have nine minutes to tell all these pictures to be the right size and wrap up! Yeah!

Dern! That took a while to upload! But that’s a twenty-minute slice of life around here these days!
Two minutes to spare! What’s happening in your neck of the woods?

Happy Tuesday! How’s it going? Sorry it’s almost gone! As promised, I am picking up where I left off last week, with pics from die strand at Strand. And good news! Remember a few weeks ago when we were in Pringle Bay and I forgot to take a picture of Hangklip because I’m a cotton-headed ninny muggins? Well I got a picture for you! Check it out:

Yeah! It’s that third point that you see in the distance there. Don’t I deliver? 🙂 Those dudes are playing rugby in case you’re wondering.
So. Strand. You gotta say it with a soft ‘ah’. The Bear is now carefully making his way out to the surf of False Bay, the big bay that Strand, Gordon’s Bay and lots of other pretty places sit on. See that mountain in the background? The almost flat looking one? That’s Cape Town’s famous Table Mountain. This picture is looking at it from the “backside” — it’s more impressive if you see it from the usually-photographed-side facing Table Bay, but either way it’s beautiful!

Now that he’s made it to the surf, the Bear is ready for Dad to come and take him out deep!

While they went for a swim, I took some shots for you! I even asked this cool surfer girl if I could take her picture just for you guys! Don’t say I never do anything for you. Her name is Megan.

I love her red board, purple leash and green board shorts. Thanks, Megan! And amusingly, this big-ol’-pointy-building right here is a condominium complex called Hibernian Towers. I can’t get away from Scottish football if I try. (The “Hibs” stadium was near where I first lived in Edinburgh.)

Here’s another slice of the general vicinity…

Yay, they’re back!

It was difficult to convince the sh-sh-shivering bear that swim time was done.

But when he got hold of someone’s beach tennis ball, he was nicely distracted.

And not keen on returning it. We eventually managed to give it back. 🙂
So here’s the finish-with-a-favourite moment. I don’t know why I like this one so much. I think it’s the funky tree on the right. I love how the beach is right there, so close to the street.

Sigh. I know you wish you were here right now, but just think: March 21st started spring for you, and autumn for us. We’re heading towards winter now! It probably won’t quite be a winter like what you’ve had in the northern hemisphere… but still.
Hope you enjoyed this TT! Did you think it was Strand-tastic? tehe Enjoy your adventure today!

Happy Tuesday! I hope your week is going grrreat! Hero Hub’s folks are still here and we went down to the Strand beachfront yesterday, so his Dad could buy a pellet gun, and the Bear could have a little swim. Strand (Afrikaans for “Beach”) is the next town over from Gordon’s Bay, if you’re headed towards Cape Town. So we were at die strand at Strand. 🙂
I took a few quick shots of the market, and lots at the beach. Hope you approve.
Here’s hubs and his folks haggling for the pellet gun. I didn’t want to get too close because our nice camera might’ve made them decide we could afford to pay more.

See the bit of mountain in the background? That’s the same set of mountains you see in lots of the pics in Gordon’s Bay. Does that help orientate you?  Good, you know where we are. Let’s press on.
This is something we haven’t quite figured out yet.

Where does this stuff come from? Why is it so cheap? Yes, that’s Oil of Olay…Centrum…Head and Shoulders…??? It doesn’t feel right to buy this stuff here, knowing that it is very likely that the people who worked hard to create these products will not be getting a cut. That’s our guess anyway.
Would you like to see a little more “marketing?”

Where do these things come from? These girls are selling them too…

Where else can you buy a leather belt, fake crocs, an Australian flag and an Arsenal (Emirates) soccer jersey, all in one store?

And just a few doors down you can get a Hannah Montana backpack! Hot!

Okay. So I was mistaken. I actually took a lot of pictures in the market. And now I need to make lunch for every body. I woke up this morning dreaming about making proper southern biscuits. (For my British and South African friends, I don’t mean something like cookies–they’re more like scones or rolls).  And so I need to get started because we’re having some for lunch! Will you forgive me if we pick up the Strand Travelling Tuesday with a Part Two next week? I took some pretty pictures and it’ll be worth the wait, I’m sure!

Sometimes I think it takes traveling halfway around the world to recognise and appreciate the beauty that’s just a few miles down the road. When Hero Hubs and I were back in North Carolina raising ministry support and enjoying time with family, we used to take a quick drive down to Goose Creek State Park, which is right down the road from my delightful hometown, wee Washington. Ahem, the original Washington. I think I’d only been there once before on a school field trip as a child, even though it was like 15 minutes away.
Anyway, HH caught some lovely shots during some of our walks down there. We spent time sitting still and we spent time in prayer. It was really peaceful.
I thought this might be an encouragement to you that you don’t have to travel halfway around the world to find beauty. It might be on your back doorstep — you just need to look for it!

I miss North Carolina’s beautiful trees.

I was preggers with the Bear at this point, so I was in a lot of the pictures, and this one is one of my favourites:

As always, I’ve saved my favourite for last! Isn’t this little guy sweet?

Mark and I had just purchased our good camera in anticipation of the Bear’s arrival, and he was already taking some lovely shots, hey?
I hope you’re having a Happy Tuesday and enjoying the adventure in front of you today!

P.S. Did you hear I’m an aunt!?!
Mar 2, 2010 | Travel..ling Tuesdays
There’s some great stuff happening in our neck of the woods! The gift heard ’round the world should finally arrive this afternoon, and I’m looking forward to posting pictures and sharing the backstory of how the Lord came through when it finally gets here! In the meantime this Travelling Tuesday I thought I’d share a few shots from our visit with our dear friends, the Youngs, who are in town from Scotland right now.
Rob is originally from South Africa, Brenda is originally from Scotland, and they ministered here in South Africa for many moons before the Lord called them to Scotland, to plant a church (the church that Mark and I were a part of!) They’re a great couple! They did a bit of our premarital counseling and were kind of like surrogate grandparents for the Bear when we lived in Edinburgh. 🙂 We miss them very much!
We went out to visit them in Pringle Bay on Friday and a few lovely shots were of course captured along the way! Pringle Bay is not too far down the road, and it boasts a beautiful and interesting rock feature that I am sorry to say I didn’t get pictures of, called Hangklip, which translated from Afrikaans I think basically means “Hanging Rock.” It’s a big rock face that basically looks like it’s going to fall in the sea. Alas! I wasn’t thinking of you, was I?
However, Hangklip kind of looks like the mountain in the background in this picture but bigger. (Forgive me?)

It was kind of windy, the sand was blowing a little, and the water was WAY chilly, so we decided against the bear going for a swim. We only let him get in up to his knees, and just briefly. It was not enough! Hero Hubs tried to console him…

But for a while he was kind of inconsolable. He likes to swim.

You can just tell Rob & Brenda are great from this shot. Don’t you want to be their friend, too?

Eventually the Bear cheered up. (Yay!)

And I saved my favourite shot for last. As always. I think this could be in a magazine!

HH’s shirt is wet because the Bear managed from that brief stint in the water to splash…and his shorts got wet. 🙂
The days are obviously still warm and sunny in our neck of the woods. Albeit wi-n-n-ndy. It was great to see Rob & Brenda. And another slice of South Africa! Hope you enjoyed it, and that you’re enjoying your adventure this Tuesday!

Happy Tuesday! I hope your week is going well. I thought I’d share some shots with you from a part of the world I miss very much: my beloved North Carolina! When Hero Hubby and I were back there raising ministry support a couple years ago, some wonderful ministry partners offered their beach place in Nags Head to us, so that we could visit a few churches and try to raise more ministry support there. Thank you, that was a blessing!
Nags Head is in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a 200 mile long string of narrow barrier islands just off the coast. The OBX are where the Wright Brothers’ first flight took place in December of 1903! Hope you enjoy, and that you get to visit the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina sometime, too!
Here’s a warm North Carolina summer sunset for you…

This is the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla. I think it’s so pretty! It’s one of my favourites.

Jockey’s Ridge is the largest natural sand dune system in the eastern United States! And lots of fun to roll down.

That’s a slice of life in a neck of the woods I miss very much! Happy Tuesday, and enjoy the adventure you have today!
